Police said two people were killed and two suspects had been arrested following the shooting in the mountain resort of Whistler, BC, on Sunday afternoon.
Superintendent Robert Dykstra, the officer in charge of the Sea to Sky RCMP, said officers were on patrol when a report came in just after noon that shots were fired at a hotel in Whistler Village.
“They found one man there clearly dead and a second man in trouble,” Dykstra said.
Attempts were made to save the man’s life, but he was later pronounced dead in hospital, he said. Dykstra said officers chased a vehicle on Highway 99, stopped it at Squamish and arrested two people in connection with the shooting.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team will conduct the investigation with the help of BC anti-gang agents, the Joint Forces Special Enforcement Unit and others.
Dykstra said he did not know the names of the victims or whether they were known to the police.
Local business owner, the public has moved
Footage of police cars and paramedics was seen Sunday afternoon in Whistler Village outside Showcase Snowboards on Sundial Crescent.
The shopping area has been closed and the rescue has been intervened on the spot. People took refuge inside a nearby business after reports of an unconfirmed shooting spread on social media.
The owners of the Whistler Village grocery store told CBC News they closed their doors as a precaution on Sunday afternoon.
“It has an impact on society and people are afraid,” said Dykstra. “We do not believe the public is at risk of further harm.”
Whistler Blackcomb is closed for today
Activities at the popular tourist destination, which is located 120 kilometers north of Vancouver, were closed after the shooting was reported.
“The RCMP has officially cleared the Whistler area of imminent danger,” Whistler Blackcomb Operations said in a tweet at 3pm. “Out of respect for all involved, guests and team members, we will be closing Whistler Blackcomb for the remainder of the day and this will be effective immediately.”
Spokeswoman Sara Roston said in a statement that the resort team was “shocked and deeply saddened by this irresponsible act of violence.”
RCMP said they would share more information as it becomes available and asked any witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to contact the Whistler contingent at 604-932-3044.
